Golf courses are irresistible to fire ants. Thanks to fertile soil, high moisture content, and open, sunny areas, danger often lurks along the fairways, bunkers, greens, and roughs.
Fire ants can cause a world of hurt to golfers and spectators. If a mound is disturbed, hundreds of ants can swarm out of it and sting repeatedly. A small number of people have a severe reaction that could lead to anaphylactic shock and even death.
Fire ants can also destroy electrical equipment on the golf course thanks to their fondness for lights, transformer boxes, and irrigation equipment.
About Fire Ant Colonies
Red imported fire ants build nests outside in mounds of soil and live underneath them in an elaborate network of underground chambers and tunnels. The oval-shaped mounds are wide like dinner plates, average 10 inches tall, and have no visible openings.
The underground network extends outward and downward and opens to the surface several inches to several feet away (sometimes up to 30 feet). Worker ants come and go through the interconnecting tunnels to hunt for and retrieve food and protect their colony from attack.
The fire ant queen is the colony’s leader. Her nest is deep inside the colony, where worker ants feed and protect her from predators. Her only purpose is to act as an egg-laying machine – populating the colony by laying 50-200 eggs per hour for as long as seven years.
Thousands of fire ants typically live in a single fire ant colony. Properties that have single-queen colonies may have 40-150 mounds and approximately 7 million red fire ants per acre. Properties with multiple-queen colonies may have 200 or more mounds and about 40 million red fire ants per acre.
