The 411 on Fire Ants

We are actually dealing with the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. It is an invasive species that migrated to our continent in the 1930s.

It arrived via ship from South America into the Port of Mobile.

Because of its preference for warm, humid climates, it has mostly remained in the southeastern parts of the country and has spread throughout them all.

These ants bite and sting, whereas most do one or the other. They bite with their mandibles so they get a good hold on what they intend to sting with their abdomens.

Then they inject a toxin.

This toxin, for most people and animals, will create an irritated pustule that may itch. It will resolve itself over time.

However, for some, the toxin can initiate an allergic reaction that could be fatal.

How Did They Spread?

Fire ants come in two varieties: with and without wings. The ones with wings are the breeders. They mate midair. Shortly after that ritual, the male dies.

The female, however, rips off her wings and walks around until she picks a place to dig. She begins her colony underground. The mating ceremony has filled her with enough sperm to continue for the next two to six years, laying up to 1,000 eggs a day.

The colony will become very large, rapidly. One colony can house hundreds of thousands of ants. These ants live four to six weeks but are being replaced constantly by the queen.

Colonies can be thirty feet deep under the surface and extend at least as far out. Imagine how quickly these colonies multiply—new mating seasons and new queens sent out to establish more.
