The red imported fire ant is just that—imported. It arrived in our country in the 1930s at the port of Mobile. Having hitched a ride from South America and its tropical climate, the ant chose to populate areas that were similar. This is why we have the problems we do here in Florida.
These ants are very interesting if you’ve never studied them. They can reproduce up to 1,000 eggs daily. They mate midair, and the male dies shortly thereafter.
Colonies can be home to up to 100,000 ants. Some of these colonies have more than one queen. Their living establishment can be more than 20 feet underground, with tunnels extending out eight feet.
The red imported fire ant is slightly different than others in that it bites and stings. Most ants only do one or the other. These, however, bite hard with their mandibles so they can get into a good position to sting you with their abdomens.
Their stings inject toxic venom into the skin. Most people will develop a pustule, while some can experience anaphylaxis. Yes, fire ants can kill you—or your animal.
When feeling attacked, these ants will sting en masse. That means every ant around is coming for you if you mess with them. If you’ve never been attacked by fire ants—believe us—you don’t want to be.
