Targets Fire Ants Where They Live and Breed
Assurance Fire Ant Bait contains the insect growth regulator (IGR) S-Methoprene with specific activity to fire ants. The IGR is contained in an attractant bait that foraging fire ant workers take back to the mound to feed to the queen.
IGRs work by affecting queen reproduction. When existing workers die, replacement workers are not produced, resulting in starvation and elimination of the queen and colony.
The effects of the treatment may not be immediately evident. IGRs are slower in activity than conventional products. Though slower in action, control is complete without the concern of rebounding or movement of the colony to another location. Reduction in colony size can be seen beginning at three weeks, with colony elimination within 8 to 10 weeks.

Individual Mound TreatmentsApply 3 to 5 tablespoons to each visible fire ant mound. Distribute the bait evenly around the mound, covering an area with a 4-foot perimeter. Avoid disturbing the mound during application. Worker ants will quickly find the bait and carry it back to the colony. Broadcast ApplicationsApply as a broadcast treatment at a rate of 1 to 1.5 pounds per acre (approximately 3.5 tablespoons per 1,000 square feet) using appropriate application equipment. You may use backpack, hand-held, or motorized mechanical equipment. Aerial applications can also be conducted with either rotary or fixed-wing aircraft. There are no restrictions on withdrawal or grazing in treated areas. Preventative Broadcast ApplicationsCan be applied preventatively to minimize fire ant infestations in undesired areas. To prevent new mound formation, two to three broadcast treatments annually are recommended. In areas of heavy infestation, repeat applications may be necessary 10 to 12 weeks following the initial application. |

Frequently Asked Questions
In which states is Assurance Fire Ant Bait labeled for use?
Assurance Fire Ant Bait is labeled for use in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
How much Assurance Fire Ant Bait is needed to cover 1 acre?
Apply as a broadcast application at the rate of 1 to 1.5 pounds of product per acre.
Can I broadcast apply the fire ant bait together with fertilizer?
Assurance Fire Ant Bait may be used in combination with other EPA registered products for the immediate control of fire ants, and should be applied simultaneously with other EPA registered bait products. Follow the product label to be sure all products can legally be combined.
Is there a specific calibration required for motorized spreaders when applying this bait?
Calibrate to apply as a broadcast application at the rate of 1 to 1.5 pounds of product per acre.
Can Assurance Fire Ant Bait be used in conjunction with other pest control products? If so, which ones?
Assurance Fire Ant Bait may be used in combination with other EPA registered products for the immediate control of fire ants, and should be applied simultaneously with other EPA registered bait products. Read all labels — the label is the law.
What are the optimal weather conditions for applying the bait?
Apply in early morning or late afternoon when ground conditions are dry and rain is not expected for at least six hours. Application during the heat of the day or in wet or rainy weather can reduce the effectiveness of the bait and make it less attractive to foraging ants.
How long does it take to see a reduction in fire ant activity after application?
IGRs are slower in activity than conventional products, so the effects may not be immediately evident. Reduction in colony size can be seen beginning at three weeks, with colony elimination within 8 to 10 weeks — and control is complete without the concern of rebounding or the colony relocating.
Are there any safety precautions or protective gear recommended for technicians during application?
You can find this information on the product label and Safety Data Sheet.
What is the expected shelf life, and how should the bait be stored?
For the best shelf life, store Assurance Fire Ant Bait in a dry, low-humidity area out of direct sun.
Can this bait be applied in areas where pets and wildlife are present?
Assurance Fire Ant Bait is approved for use around pets and livestock as long as it is applied according to the product label instructions. No withdrawal or grazing restrictions are necessary on treated areas.
What is the reapplication interval if fire ant activity persists or returns?
In areas of heavy infestation, repeat applications may be necessary 10 to 12 weeks following the initial application.
How does Assurance Fire Ant Bait affect the queen and the colony?
The IGR S-Methoprene is contained in an attractant bait that foraging workers carry back to the mound to feed to the queen. It affects queen reproduction: when existing workers die, replacement workers are not produced, resulting in starvation and elimination of the queen and colony.
Is there a recommended treatment plan for severe versus minor infestations?
For areas of high infestation, broadcast at the higher end of the recommended application rate (1.5 lbs per acre) and continue to treat the area within the allowable frequency to keep infestations under control.
What are the most common mistakes to avoid when applying with a motorized spreader?
The most common mistakes involve not following the product label. Application during the heat of the day or when rain is expected within 6 hours will reduce effectiveness, and moisture reduces the attractiveness of the bait in wet areas.
How does the bait hold up in different soil types?
Assurance Fire Ant Bait has the same effectiveness in nearly all soil types.
Is there a preferred time of day to apply Assurance Fire Ant Bait?
The best time to broadcast is when soil is dry and outside the hottest part of the day.
Can the bait be applied near water sources?
Do not apply directly to water, areas where surface water is present, or intertidal areas below the mean high water mark. Do not contaminate water when disposing of rinsate or equipment washwaters.
How should leftover bait and empty containers be disposed of?
Pesticide Disposal: Wastes resulting from the use of this product may be disposed of on site or at an approved waste disposal facility.
Container Disposal: Plastic bags — nonrefillable container. Do not reuse or refill. Completely empty the bag into application equipment, then offer for recycling if available or dispose of the empty bag in a sanitary landfill or by incineration, or, if allowed by state and local authorities, by burning. If burned, stay out of smoke.
