What Makes Them So Bad?

Perhaps the most obvious reason they are bad is the fact that they are invasive and non-native. Anytime you have a species enter that doesn’t belong, it interrupts the natural flow of the native environment. Other native creatures are injured in the invasion.

But maybe you think the most obvious reason red imported fire ants are bad is because they bite. And that is true, but they actually bite and sting. This makes them doubly bad. Even more awful is that some people and animals are allergic, and anaphylaxis can ensue.

Another reason they are terrible intruders is that their tunnels can topple buildings by weakening the dirt beneath concrete foundations. They can short out HVAC and well pump systems too.

How Did They Get Here?

Apparently, they arrived in the 1930s via ships from South America. These ships landed in the Port of Mobile. Liking the warmer, humid weather, the ants migrated throughout the southeastern United States.

They have been here for nearly 100 years now. It’s been a long battle.

What Takes Them Out?

We know that there are a lot of pieces out there about natural ways to combat these creatures. Unfortunately, most of those are utterly ineffective, and one of them is actually helping them survive.

Using boiling water, vinegar, and even the old light-them-on-fire method is not going to do what you want. The surface-level ants will undoubtedly die, but the issue is far deeper beneath the surface than anything like that can fix.

And if you are believing the grits story, that is the one that will be feeding them instead. Grits don’t expand in their digestive tracts. Sadly.
