Started in 1993 by Jim & Debbie Stine, we began as a complete pest control company. However, we quickly learned that our Ocala-based business was going to do more good for its local community if we focused on fire ant control. You are welcome to read our story.
As time progressed and we learned more about the industry, we became experts in our field. Now, with the assistance of our sister companies, we are able to treat up to 1000 acres every day. That is making a huge difference in this battle.
What Battle?
War is declared when an invading entity tries to gain ground that is not theirs. In the 1930s, some Solenopsis invicta, red imported fire ants, stowed away on a cargo ship from South America. When they arrived at the Port of Mobile, they infiltrated our country.
Since that time, they have invaded the Southeastern parts of the US and also California. Because of their native environment, they seek places that will give them the most tropical climate around. Florida happens to be extra desirable to them.
But how could such a tiny creature be a big enough nuisance for this to be called war? Well, each colony can house up to 500,000 ants. And each queen can produce up to 800 eggs a day. Their numbers far surpass ours, and they don’t even live in every state.
We may be outnumbered, but we won’t be outsmarted.
What’s the Plan?
Fire Ant Specialists has invested more than 30 years in this war. We have learned a whole lot over that time. For instance, when you buy “bait” at the garden center or local hardware store, it’s not even something that entices for use as food, the definition of bait. It’s all more of a kill-on-contact concept.
Kill on contact chemicals are more dangerous for your animals because they don’t have to be ingested in order to be harmful. The bait granules that Fire Ant Specialists utilize are so tiny that it would be very hard for your pets or livestock to eat enough of them to experience any ill effects.
We understand that because of the sheer size of the colony beneath the surface, we need to aim at more than just those who walk along the ground visibly. This is why our bait is enticing for the purpose of eating because it makes worker ants want to bring it back to their queen. And when she eats it, she is sterilized.
Sterilizing the queen is the best tactic in this battle. Worker ants have a very limited lifespan, as compared to people or dogs. Typically, they don’t live past six weeks. The queen’s egg output is simply replenishing her kingdom as they die off quickly. So, stopping her ability to restore her numbers means the end of the entire colony.
