Unlike most other ants, the red imported fire ant bites and stings. It uses its mandibles to get a good grip on its victim so that it can use the stinger on the abdomen to inject toxin. Some people and animals are allergic to the toxin, and it proves deadly in their cases.

Because ants will sting repeatedly, en masse, it is actually possible for them to gang up on an animal and kill it by stinging it to death. This is obviously the most well-known understanding of the danger associated with fire ants.

But consider the fact that they can build their colonies beneath structures and thereby cause them to collapse. And, their desire for warmth can place them inside HVAC systems and well pump houses, causing shortages and sometimes even fires.
