What’s the Story?

Most people probably think that these fire ants are indigenous. The truth is, they came over from South America, landing in the Port of Mobile in the 1930s. Since then, they have sought to spread into every humid and warm space within the continental U.S.

Another thing that people don’t realize is that when we say these ants like warm and humid spaces, this also means places like electrical boxes, pump houses, parking lots, etc. They are problematic in HVAC systems and can cause foundations to crack due to the tunnels they create beneath the surface. Those tunnels can go 30 feet deep!

Then there’s their toxicity. These ants don’t just bite you, and they don’t just sting you—they do both! First, they get a good hold on you with their mandibles, and then they inject you with their toxin. If you aren’t allergic, you will end up with a pustule that will go away. Allergic reactions, though, can end in death.

For something so tiny, these creatures have vast strength. When in numbers, they are known to aggressively and repeatedly attack. Red imported fire ants are not entities you want living on your property.
