We take this battle seriously. Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) have harmed people, pets, livestock, and property for nearly a century. Since their arrival from South America in the 1930s, they’ve spread through warm, humid regions. Fire Ant Specialists fight back with methods that reach the queen.
How They Spread
Historically, the fire ants began the invasion at the Port of Mobile. Because they are from South America, they went searching for tropical climates within our country. Of course Florida, Texas, and California would be perfect locales for them.
On an evening after a rain you may see the winged males and females mating mid air. The male deposits enough sperm to last the female the entirety of her life (which can be up to 7 years). They both return to earth and he dies off.
The female rips off her own wings and begins her trek on the ground. When she finds a suitable place for her colony to begin, she digs down below the surface and lays a few eggs. This colony can become home to 500,000 ants and she can replace up to 800 workers every day by laying as many eggs.
Colonies do send out winged ants for the purpose of extending their kingdoms. These colonies will not unite with one another as they become very territorial. But it does mean another 500,000 ants somewhere else.
Stopping the Takeover
We didn’t originally intend to be in the fire ant business, specifically, but our proximity to horse farmers gave us a hands-on experience that changed our trajectory. The farmers were being overwhelmed by ants they could not rid themselves of. They were losing horses to these tiny terrors.
So, we developed a proven granular bait that serves as a slow action exterminator and a queen sterilizer. Because it is an actual bait, the worker ants are enticed to deliver it to their queen. Once she ingests it she becomes sterile. This means that as her worker ants die off, their lifespan is 4-6 weeks, she is not making replacements for her military.
With no workers to care for the previously laid eggs and developing larvae, the entire colony perishes. She has no one to feed or care for her so she dies as well. The good thing about the slow acting aspect of our bait is that the gradual die off does not trigger an attempt at rescue by the winged ants. It’s a sneak attack and it is highly effective.
